Nu we in de voorgaande workshops* de kneepjes van het vak hebben geleerd, gaan we aan de slag met een long-stitch binding, waarbij de binding in de rug een onderdeel vormt van de cover. Net als bij de Nid d’Abeille kan deze binding enkel met de hand worden uitgevoerd: puur handwerk dat fijngevoeligheid en een vaste hand vraagt. Zoals bij de eerdere boekbindtechnieken schuilt ook hier een wereld aan variaties.
Tatsuya, docent aan La Cambre, die voor workshop nr. 1 en nr. 2 de fakkel doorgaf aan Matilde en Jeanne, is een meester om aan het werk te zien. Hij beheerst deze — en vele andere — technieken met een bijzondere precisie en liefde voor het vak, iets waarvoor ik enkel bewondering kan hebben. Het is dan ook fijn dat hij via deze workshops verbonden wil blijven met het atelier en met de gedeelde filosofie om mensen thuis te laten boekbinden, door een stevige en mooie basis. Ook deze techniek kan perfect thuis worden uitgevoerd, zonder de speciaal materiaal.
Workshop nr. 1 en bij voorkeur ook nr. 2 zijn vereist, zodat iedereen over dezelfde basiskennis van papier, gereedschappen en terminologie beschikt en in een comfortabel tempo kan volgen. Dank voor het begrip.

Après avoir acquis les bases du métier lors des ateliers précédents*, nous abordons la reliure long-stitch, une technique où la reliure du dos fait partie intégrante de la couverture. Comme pour la reliure Nid d’Abeille, cette technique ne peut être réalisée qu’à la main : un travail entièrement manuel qui requiert finesse, précision et une main assurée. À l’instar des techniques de reliure déjà explorées, elle recèle elle aussi une infinité de variations.
Tatsuya, enseignant à La Cambre, qui a transmis le flambeau à Matilde et Jeanne pour les ateliers n° 1 et n° 2, est un véritable maître à observer à l’œuvre. Il maîtrise cette technique — et bien d’autres — avec une précision remarquable et un profond amour du métier, ce qui suscite toute mon admiration. C’est donc un plaisir qu’il souhaite, à travers ces ateliers, rester lié à l’atelier et à la philosophie partagée consistant à permettre à chacun de pratiquer la reliure chez soi, à partir d’une base solide et esthétique. Cette technique peut en effet être réalisée à la maison, sans nécessiter de matériel spécifique.
La participation à l’atelier n° 1 et, de préférence, à l’atelier n° 2 est requise, afin que chacun dispose des mêmes connaissances de base en matière de papier, d’outils et de terminologie, et puisse suivre l’atelier à un rythme confortable. Merci de votre compréhension.

Having learned the fundamentals of the craft in the previous workshops*, we now turn to the long-stitch binding — a technique in which the binding along the spine becomes an integral part of the cover. As with the Nid d’Abeille binding, this technique can only be executed by hand: a purely manual process that requires sensitivity, precision, and a steady hand. Like the bookbinding techniques explored before, it offers a rich world of variations.
Tatsuya, a lecturer at La Cambre, who passed the torch to Matilde and Jeanne for workshops no. 1 and no. 2, is a master to watch at work. He practices this — and many other — techniques with exceptional precision and a deep love for the craft, something I can only admire. It is therefore a pleasure that, through these workshops, he wishes to remain connected to the atelier and to the shared philosophy of encouraging people to bind books at home, starting from a strong and beautiful foundation. This technique, too, can be carried out perfectly at home, without the need for specialized materials.
Workshop no. 1 and preferably also no. 2 are required, so that all participants share the same basic knowledge of paper, tools, and terminology, and can follow the workshop at a comfortable pace. Thank you for your understanding.
